Today, I am going to talk about a dish I love to make on weekends, a dish that is devoured to the last bit every single time. This is why I call it the best biscuits and gravy recipe. Is that a fact? Well, you will have to prepare it and see for yourself.
For this dish, I use my buttermilk biscuits. I always have some stored in my freezer, and I am sure that once you try them, you will understand why.
Anyway, I will skip the biscuit part because you can find the full recipe in the bread section or in the link above.
In my opinion, you simply cannot have biscuits and gravy without sausage, and as much I try to eat less meat, I just can't imagine vegan biscuits and gravy, but I am open to suggestions and trying out new recipes. This being said, let's learn how to make biscuits and gravy.
- In a pan, mix the olive oil and the butter. Let it heat on low heat while you chop your onion.
- When the butter has completely melted, add the paprika and the garlic powder and stir to combine. Bring the chopped onion to the pan and let it fry for 4-5 minutes or until translucent.
- Take the skin off your sausages and place them in the pan.
- Using a spatula, start breaking the composition into smaller pieces. Stir to combine. Take the heat to medium and leave it for a couple of minutes to allow the sausage to cook.
- Take the heat back to low and add the flour.
- Stir until all the flour has been incorporated and start pouring the double cream. Don't stop stirring. You want the cream to thicken as you pour it.
- Let it cook on low heat for a couple of minutes until it is bubbly and nice.
- Take it off the heat and add the chopped dill.
- Give it a taste and season it with salt, pepper, and chili flakes (if using.)
- In another pan, heat your frying oil and fry your eggs sunny-side-up style.
- Take your buttermilk biscuits and open them in the middle.
- Place the bottom of the biscuit on a plate and add some gravy to it. Top it with the other part of the biscuit and serve this with your nice sunny-side-up egg. Repeat the process for each plate.
The biscuits and gravy dish is a very popular one worldwide, but especially in the US's southern part. And this has to do with the recipe's history. This meal appeared after the American Revolutionary War as a response to the lack of too many ingredients.
Today is served as breakfast in many restaurants and is considered to be one of the most comfortable things one could eat as a mourning meal.
* You can use any kind of sausage you prefer for this recipe. You can even add some extra bacon if you wish.
** You can reheat the gravy and eat it again if you have any leftovers.
